Left Avignon early, first stop Arles, a city established in the 6th century BC by Romans and is the centre of the Provence region. Plenty of Roman ruins, visited the Roman Amphitheatre, very well preserved and maintained for the tourists. Next door we went into the Forum, the entry and gardens were beautiful, the toilets were disgusting!!! Van Gogh was a famous resident and many of his paintings depict scenes from this region, including his famous Yellow Cafe.
Next through Salon du Provence and into Aix en Provence, the Palace of Justice in the centre of town is a very imposing building built in the 15th century. This town is the most elegant part of Provence and is the most expensive city to live in the region. Very neat and tidy place. The TGB (High Speed Train) leaves from near here and travels the 950kms to Paris in 3 hours.
Had lunch at a sidewalk cafe(curried lamb and calamari steak), beautiful setting with streets lined with plane trees.
Left Nice and traveled through huge rocky mountains, closer to the coast to Grasse. Visited the Fragomande perfume factory in Grasse, very clean and clinical factory, it's all made very scientifically and it just looks like a chemical factory. Interesting they source flowers from all over the world (including Australia) to make their different scents. Didn't buy any...too smelly!!!
Headed down towards the coast and along the Mediterranean Sea, through the French Riviera, Cannes and in to Nice. Looking forward to a couple of nights in Nice to relax and unwind a bit. Got to the motel about 6pm (another small shower and two single beds). The group booked a meal at a local restaurant in the old part of Nice. Huge meal - salad noisette, fish in white sauce with beans and potatoes, cheese plate and an enormous piece of home made meringue pie....sleep well tonight after a busy day and great night.
